Engineering Matter-ready Home Automation Solutions with Reusable Blueprints

The smart home solutions industry has been maturing rapidly over time with the integration of AI and Matter, helping them to deliver better user experiences and reliability.

What are the challenges with home automation solutions?

The home automation solution generally appears very simple on the surface, where users can easily onboard devices through a hub and then start managing them. Let’s name these challenges one by one:  

Fragmented connectivity: Like I mentioned earlier that these home automation systems need to support multiple connectivity protocols and proprietary RF technologies simultaneously. So, choosing the right (connectivity) architecture becomes increasingly difficult for engineering teams.  

Supporting multiple platforms: Manufacturers can no longer afford to develop products that work with only one ecosystem. Enabling interoperability also becomes an important challenge.  

Connected systems means that security issues needs to be addressed: With every connected device added to your home automation system, the attack surface keeps increasing. Encryption, secure onboarding, certificate management, authenticated OTA updates etc. becomes a burning challenge for engineering teams.  

Scalability: For any home automation solution, it starts with managing few products and then as time passes, the amount of devices to be managed also increases. This means that the underlying architecture also needs to scale without the need for major redesigns.  

Long Development Cycles: Developing firmware, apps, connectivity stacks, cloud integration, certification and compliance etc. often stretch the development cycle.

Matter becoming the foundation for Smart Home

One thing that has emerged in the last few years is Matter as a universal interoperability standard, unifying connectivity across multiple ecosystems. Before we discuss it further, I want to touch upon its history a bit.  

Some of you might remember the Zigbee Alliance, which was founded by a group of companies in 2001. In 2021, the Zigbee Alliance rebranded itself as the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA). By 2022, they released Matter 1.0 in collaboration with Apple, Samsung, Comcast, IKEA, Signify, Google, Amazon, Silicon Labs, NXP, Infineon, and many others. 

Rather than building separate integrations for each system, Matter provides a common application layer to allow communication across platforms. It has been adopted by all major manufacturers, and it simplifies everything such as device onboarding, encryption, and authentication. It reduces dependency on cloud and improves reliability and latency through local communication.  

However, implementing Matter may have its own challenges such as managing Thread border routing, BLE commissioning, protocol bridging, security certificates, Wi-Fi provisioning, OTA infrastructure etc. This means you still have longer development cycles that you have to deal with.
